Your neighbors in Mine Hill
Dover borders Mine Hill, so for Dover businesses we're the CPA next door. The town's downtown along Blackwell Street is full of owner-run restaurants, shops and service businesses, and many contractors and tradespeople are based in and around Dover. Our work for them is practical: clean books, correct sales tax, payroll that's filed on time and a return that holds up.
Contractors and the trades
- Sales tax on your jobs. In New Jersey, a capital improvement (a remodel, an addition, a new roof) isn't taxed to the customer if they give you a Certificate of Exempt Capital Improvement (Form ST-8); you pay sales tax on the materials instead. Repairs and maintenance work are generally taxable, and you must charge the tax. Keeping the right form for each job matters in an audit.
- Subcontractors. New Jersey's ABC test presumes a worker is an employee unless all three parts are met. Paying helpers on a 1099 when they should be on payroll can bring back payroll taxes and penalties.
- Job costing. Tracking materials and labor by job in QuickBooks shows which work actually makes money.
- Forms 1099-NEC. Issued on time to every subcontractor you paid $600 or more in 2025 (the threshold rises to $2,000 for payments made in 2026).
Restaurants, shops and service businesses
- Sales tax returns filed on schedule, with collections that match your register reports.
- Tipped employees. Tips reported through payroll, and the federal credit restaurants can claim for the employer share of Social Security and Medicare tax on tips.
- Cash businesses. Daily sales recorded consistently, so your deposits, your books and your return agree.
Multi-member LLCs and family businesses
An LLC with two or more owners is taxed as a partnership unless it elects otherwise. It files a federal Form 1065 and a New Jersey NJ-1065, pays a New Jersey filing fee based on the number of owners, and issues K-1s to each owner. We make sure the profit split on the return matches your operating agreement, and look at whether an S corporation election or NJ BAIT would save the owners tax.
How we work
Most of our work happens through our secure client portal, by phone and by video call, so you don't need to take time off to drop off documents. In-person meetings are available by appointment. We respond within one business day, and we're available Saturdays as well as weekdays.
Frequently asked questions
Do I charge sales tax on a kitchen remodel in New Jersey?
Generally no, if the work is a capital improvement and the customer gives you a completed Form ST-8. You pay sales tax on the materials you buy instead. Repairs and maintenance work are generally taxable, so you charge the customer sales tax on those jobs.
Can I pay the people who work for me as 1099 contractors?
Only if they pass New Jersey's ABC test: they're free from your control, the work is outside your usual business or places of business, and they have their own independently established business. Otherwise New Jersey treats them as employees.
Does my two-owner LLC file its own tax return?
Yes. By default it's taxed as a partnership and files a federal Form 1065 and a New Jersey NJ-1065, pays a New Jersey filing fee based on the number of owners, and issues a K-1 to each owner, unless it has elected to be taxed as an S corporation.
Are you close to Dover?
Yes. Our practice is in Mine Hill, which borders Dover. In-person meetings are available by appointment, and most clients share documents through our secure portal.
