New York tax issues we handle every day
- Living in Rockland, working in New Jersey. Residents who work across the state line file a New Jersey nonresident return and claim a credit on their New York return for the tax paid to New Jersey.
- Working in New York City. As a Rockland resident, you don't owe New York City income tax on wages earned in the city. The city tax applies to city residents.
- The MCTMT for the self-employed. Rockland is in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District. Starting in 2026, self-employed individuals generally owe the MCTMT once their net earnings allocated to the district exceed $150,000 (the threshold was $50,000 in earlier years), which is easy to miss.
- S corporations and PTET. New York requires its own S corporation election, separate from the federal one. New York's pass-through entity tax (PTET) can let partnerships and S corporations work around the federal cap on deducting state taxes, but the election must be made each year by March 15.
- Depreciation differences. New York generally doesn't follow federal bonus depreciation, so your state depreciation can differ from your federal return.
- College savings. New York taxpayers can deduct contributions to the state's 529 plan, up to $5,000 a year ($10,000 for joint filers).
Who we work with
Professionals and families with multi-state income, equity compensation or crypto; small business owners who want clean books and a plan; and anyone who has received a letter from the IRS or the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance and wants it handled correctly.
How we work
Most of our work happens through our secure client portal, by phone and by video call, so you don't need to take time off to drop off documents. We respond within one business day, and we're available Saturdays as well as weekdays.
Frequently asked questions
Do you prepare New Jersey returns for Rockland residents who work in New Jersey?
Yes. We prepare the New Jersey nonresident return and the New York resident return together, including the credit for taxes paid to New Jersey.
Do I owe the MCTMT if I'm self-employed in Rockland County?
Starting in 2026, you generally do if your net earnings from self-employment allocated to the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District exceed $150,000 for the year (up from $50,000 in prior years). It's reported with your New York income tax return.
Should my business make the New York PTET election?
It can save federal tax for many owners of partnerships and S corporations, but it has to be elected each year by March 15 and doesn't help everyone. We'll run the numbers for your situation.
Can you help with a notice from New York State?
Yes. We review the notice, determine whether it's correct, and respond on your behalf, whether it involves an individual or a business account.
Which Rockland County towns do you serve?
All of them, including New City, Nanuet, Nyack, Pearl River, Suffern, Spring Valley, Stony Point, Haverstraw, Orangeburg, Tappan, Congers and Monsey, as well as clients throughout New York.
