The deadline that ends organizations
An organization that fails to file its required annual return or notice for three consecutive years automatically loses its tax-exempt status. Reinstatement means reapplying. If your organization has fallen behind, it's worth acting before the third year.
Bookkeeping built for nonprofits
- Separate tracking of net assets with and without donor restrictions
- Grant tracking, so restricted money is spent and reported as the donor required
- Expenses split between program, management and fundraising, the way the Form 990 reports them
- Board-ready monthly or quarterly financial reports
State requirements
Charities soliciting in New Jersey register with the Division of Consumer Affairs, and those in New York with the Attorney General's Charities Bureau, and both renew annually. Depending on revenue, the states can require financial statements reviewed or audited by an independent CPA. We prepare the books and returns, and coordinate with your independent auditor where one is required.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if we don't file a Form 990?
Penalties can apply, and an organization that doesn't file for three consecutive years automatically loses its tax-exempt status.
Do small nonprofits have to file anything?
Generally yes. Even organizations with gross receipts normally $50,000 or less must file the Form 990-N e-Postcard each year (churches are an exception).
When is the Form 990 due?
The 15th day of the fifth month after the end of the fiscal year (May 15 for calendar-year organizations), with a six-month extension available.
Do you perform nonprofit audits?
No. We provide bookkeeping, Form 990 preparation and state filings, and we work alongside your independent auditor when an audit or review is required.
