Tax work that fits Rockaway
Rockaway Borough and Rockaway Township are separate municipalities, and we serve both. Along Route 46 and Interstate 80 they hold a mix of light industrial space, warehouses, auto and service shops, and retail around Rockaway Townsquare, and the township is also home to Picatinny Arsenal. Businesses that hold inventory, ship products or buy and resell parts all share the same need: books that track what you have and what it cost.
Inventory and cost of goods sold
- Small-business methods. Businesses under the gross receipts threshold (average annual receipts of $32 million or less for 2026) can skip the complex Section 263A cost capitalization rules and may treat inventory as non-incidental materials and supplies. You still need to know what you have on hand.
- Year-end counts. A physical count tied to your books, so cost of goods sold isn't a guess.
- Equipment and tools. Smaller purchases can often be expensed under the de minimis safe harbor instead of depreciated.
Sales tax across state lines
- Sales for resale. When another business buys from you to resell, a New Jersey resale certificate (Form ST-3) on file lets you skip the tax. Without it, you may owe the tax yourself in an audit.
- Selling into other states. Most states require you to register and collect once your sales into the state pass their economic nexus threshold, often $100,000. See sales tax nexus, and if you're already behind, voluntary disclosure.
- Repairs and service. In New Jersey, labor to repair or maintain tangible property, such as vehicles and equipment, is generally taxable along with the parts.
QuickBooks done right
We set up your chart of accounts, connect your bank feeds and sales channels, and reconcile every month. If your file has years of miscategorized transactions, we clean it up first, then show you or your bookkeeper how to keep it clean. See bookkeeping services.
How we work
Most of our work happens through our secure client portal, by phone and by video call, so you don't need to take time off to drop off documents. In-person meetings are available by appointment. We respond within one business day, and we're available Saturdays as well as weekdays.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to track inventory if I'm a small business?
Yes. Even businesses that qualify for the simpler small-business methods still deduct the cost of inventory when it's sold, not when it's bought, so you need a year-end count and records of what you paid.
Do I charge New Jersey sales tax when I sell to another business?
Not if the buyer is purchasing the goods to resell and gives you a completed New Jersey resale certificate (Form ST-3). Keep the certificate on file; without it, the sale is presumed taxable.
Do you work with businesses in both Rockaway Borough and Rockaway Township?
Yes. They're separate municipalities with their own property tax rates and local rules, and we serve businesses and residents in both.
Do you meet with clients in person?
Yes, by appointment. Most clients work with us by video call and phone, and share documents through our secure client portal, so an office visit is never required.
