Westchester tax issues we handle
- Commuting to New York City. As a Westchester resident you don't owe New York City income tax on wages earned in the city; the city tax applies to city residents.
- Working in Connecticut. If you work in Stamford, Greenwich or elsewhere in Connecticut, you file a Connecticut nonresident return and claim a credit on your New York return (Form IT-112-R) for the tax paid to Connecticut.
- The MCTMT for the self-employed. Westchester is in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District. Starting in 2026, self-employed individuals generally owe the MCTMT once their net earnings allocated to the district exceed $150,000.
- PTET. New York's pass-through entity tax can let partnerships and S corporations work around the federal cap on deducting state taxes. The election is due each year by March 15.
- Yonkers. The City of Yonkers has its own income tax for residents and an earnings tax for nonresidents who work there. See CPA in Yonkers.
- Property taxes. Westchester's property taxes are among the highest in the country. Make sure you're receiving STAR, and consider a grievance if your assessment is too high; grievance dates vary by town and city.
Towns we serve
- White Plains. The county seat, home to the county and state courts and to corporate and law offices. Our work here centers on business owners and executives: PTET, reasonable compensation, equity compensation and multi-state payroll.
- Scarsdale and the surrounding villages. For families with significant assets, New York's estate tax matters long before the federal one does. The 2026 exclusion is $7.35 million, and an estate just over it can lose the exclusion entirely. New York has no gift tax, but taxable gifts made within three years of death are added back to the estate. See New York estate tax.
- Tarrytown and the river towns. Life-sciences and technology employers along the Hudson mean many residents hold RSUs, ESPP shares and stock options. See equity compensation.
- Yonkers. City income tax, rental property and multi-member LLCs. See CPA in Yonkers.
We also work with clients in New Rochelle, Mount Vernon, Rye, Harrison, Mamaroneck, Port Chester, Ossining, Peekskill and throughout the county.

Frequently asked questions
I live in Westchester and work in Connecticut. Where do I file?
You file a Connecticut nonresident return for your Connecticut wages and a New York resident return reporting all your income. New York gives a credit (Form IT-112-R) for the income tax paid to Connecticut on the same income.
Do I owe New York City income tax if I live in Westchester and work in Manhattan?
No. New York City income tax applies only to city residents. Your wages are reported on your New York State resident return.
Do I owe the MCTMT if I'm self-employed in Westchester?
Starting in 2026, you generally do if your net earnings from self-employment allocated to the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District exceed $150,000 for the year (up from $50,000 in prior years). It's reported with your New York income tax return.
What is the New York estate tax cliff?
New York's 2026 exclusion is $7.35 million. An estate that exceeds it by more than 5% loses the exclusion entirely, so the whole estate is taxed, not just the amount over the line. Planning ahead can keep an estate under the cliff.
Do you meet with clients in person?
Yes, by appointment. Most clients work with us by video call and phone, and share documents through our secure client portal, so an office visit is never required.
